The existing City Island bridge in the Bronx was opened to traffic in 1901 and connects City Island to Rodmans Neck. Due to substandard geometry and substantial deterioration, this bridge is slated to be demolished and replaced with a new cable-stayed bridge on the same alignment.
Various bridge types were considered for the replacement bridge. A conventional multi-span bridge consisting of steel plate girders was considered. An arch bridge was considered. A single tower cable-stayed bridge with 185 m main span and 72 m side span was considered.
The City of New Yorks preference is to build a signature cable-stayed bridge. The value engineering team proposed an alternative single tower cable-stayed bridge layout with 120 m main span and 65 m side span. The shorter span will allow cost savings while still meeting navigation channel requirements. OPAC was engaged by Value Management Strategies to perform value engineering of the proposed design alternatives.
