This project consists of bridge type selection, preliminary design, and final design supervision of three alternatives for the two parallel bridges of the SR-182 Columbia River crossing at Richland, Washington. Seven bridge types and layouts were considered for this 1,870-ft crossing. Preliminary design and final design and plan production were made for the cast-in-place concrete, precast segmental concrete, and the steel box girder alternative. A 63.67 ft deck-width cast-in-place segmental bridge with three 450-ft center spans and two 261-ft side spans was selected for construction. The bridges won a 1985 PCI award for excellence in bridge design. T.Y. Lin International (TYLI) was the structural consultant.
- Mark Ketchum, current OPAC principal, served as Lead Engineer while at TYLI, and performed the preliminary design of all the alternatives, including the cast-in-place segmental option. He also provided guidance to the Washington State DOT engineers during final design.
